The Steps to ASE Certification

Obtaining an ASE certification is no easy task. To become an ASE certified mechanic, technicians have two years of hands-on experience and must pass a series of grueling tests. In addition to meeting rigorous initial requirements, technicians who wish to remain certified must stay up-to-date with changes in automotive technology and techniques. ASE certification requirements include:

• Experience: Before they can become certified by the NIASE, mechanics must have two years of relevant on-the job training or a single year of on-the-job training plus a two-year degree in automotive repair.
• Testing: ASE tests are challenging, and about one in three mechanics fail them on their first attempts. The tests are written by a panel of respected industry professionals, and they are designed to weed out candidates who lack the skills or knowledge necessary to provide top quality customer service.
• Follow-up testing: Things change quickly in the auto repair sector, and practices that were commonplace and considered acceptable just a few years ago may be frowned upon today. To ensure that ASE certification requirements continue to exceed customer expectations for quality and service, licensed mechanics must pass the tests again every three to five years.
