Automatic transmissions depend on fluid pressure to operate, and problems can arise from the torque converter, the filter, burnt fluid or just low fluid levels. Gears are changed using a series of clutch bands that can wear out over time, and the servo motors and electronics that control them can fail.

A manual transmission replaces the electronic controls with driver-operated components. Instead of clutch bands, there are shift forks and servos that engage the gears. Instead of a torque converter, power is transferred between the engine’s flywheel and the transmission’s clutch plate, operated by a cable or hydraulically-operated clutch pedal. Like any car, the first thing to come to mind when thinking of manual transmission problems in a Kia is clutch repair, but poor adjustment and wear and tear are just as likely to cause problems.
